PUNXSUTAWNEY â In a breakout effort, Lady Chucks' midfielder Emily Horner connected for a 'hat trick' and an assist to help send the hometown seniors away winners, 4-3, over the Lady Rovers of Brockway on Tuesday night in Punxsutawney.
"This was Emily Horner's breakout game," explained Punxsy coach Kevin Hughes. "The movement and effort she had was great. She worked hard for every single one of those goals."
And Punxsy would need every single one of those goals to defeat Brockway.
The Lady Rovers cut the Lady Chucks' lead down to a single score, 3-2, with 6:51 left in the contest in traffic in front of the goal.
The Brockway momentum did not last long. Only 1:36 later, Horner completed her 'hat trick' by hitting the upper left corner of the goal off a pass from the right by Anna Horner to put it back to a two goal advantage, 4-2.
Punxsy would need the extra cushion. The Lady Rovers put the pressure on and scored on the second Julie Esposito tally 45 seconds later to make it 4-3. The Lady Chucks' defense held from there as Esposito launched one last attempt with 1:30 left that hit over the goal as the home team pulled out the 4-3 victory.
"The defense did good just containing Julie Esposito, but allowed her to have space a few times that gave her the chances to score," said Hughes.
Punxsy started the scoring at 25:49, when Horner crossed the ball from the right to the middle of the goal where Courtney Huffman hit in the rebound off the Brockway keeper's hands.
Just 2:08 before the half, Horner netted her first goal. She made it around two Lady Rover defenders and proceeded to loft the ball from around 25 yards over the goalie into the net to make the score, 2-0.
Esposito connected for Brockway's first goal of the day, 6:03 into the second 40 minutes, to cut the difference to 2-1.
At 51:51, Horner took the ball off a rebound past one defender and hooked it around the lower right corner for her second score for a 3-1 tally.
"Our shot ratio was good tonight. It was nice to outshoot someone," added Hughes.
Punxsy outshot Brockway 22-7 while improving to a 5-6 record on the season.
The Lady Chucks will play next against the Lady Tide of Curwensville at 11 a.m. on Saturday.View more articles in:
