High-speed accident sends 3 to hospital

PUNXSUTAWNEY — A one-vehicle accident at 4:56 p.m. Wednesday afternoon on Cliff Street sent the three passengers to the hospital for treatment of moderate injuries.

According to Punxsutawney Borough Police, a Pontiac Grand Prix driven by Michael Ritz, was traveling west on Cliff Street at a high rate of speed when he failed to negotiate a curve and drove off the roadway, striking a tree with his vehicle coming to rest shortly thereafter.

Police said Ritz was not injured in the crash. However, his three passengers were treated at the scene for various injuries and transported by Jefferson County EMS to Punxsutawney Area Hospital for further treatment.

According to police, the investigation into the accident is continuing.
Police were assisted at the scene by the Central Fire Department, Jefferson County EMS and Walkers Towing.
