Harry V. Nicholson, 81

Harry V. Nicholson, 81, Punxsutawney, died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2012, at home.

He was born Dec. 1, 1931, in Punxsutawney, a son of the late Harry Lee and Iva O. (Williams) Nicholson.

On August 16, 1957, he married Helen I. (Fox) Nicholson, who preceded him in death on Oct. 4, 1997.

On July 24, 1999, he then married Bernice L. (Kramer) Nicholson, who survives.

He was an elementary principal in the Punxsutawney Area School District for 15 years.

He also taught in the Punxsutawney and DuBois Area School Districts for 20 years.

He held a bachelor’s from I.U.P., a master’s degree from the Pennsylvania State University, and a specialist certificate from I.U.P.

He served in the U.S. Army for two years during the Korean Conflict.

Mr. Nicholson was an original member of the Planning and Zoning Commission of Punxsutawney.

He also helped establish and participated in the City Softball League.

He served as treasurer of the P.A.S.R. Jefferson County Retired Teachers Organization.

He was also instrumental in establishing the “Coping with Loss” Support Group for the Punxsutawney area.

He was an active member of the First Church of God in Punxsutawney, teaching Christian Education for 62 years and singing in the church choir — including the Living Christmas Tree.

He was a member and chairperson of the Board of Christian Education, Advisory Council and Board of Trustees, Director of “Men of the Church of God,” Lay Representative to the State General Assembly of the Church of God, and a member of the Executive Council in Western Pennsylvania.

He was also a Gideon.

In addition to his wife, surviving relatives include a daughter, Greta Helsel and husband Brian; a grandson, Ian Helsel; a brother, Harold Nicholson; stepchildren Debbie Nicholson and husband Gary, Pamela Bantley and husband Dave, Patty Wasicki and husband Greg, and Douglas Kramer; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his first wife, Helen (Fox) Nicholson, and his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Smith.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Deeley Funeral Home, Punxsutawney.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012, at the First Church of God of Punxsutawney with Pastor Wayne Anderson officiating.

Interment will be in Circle Hill Cemetery, Punxsutawney.
