PUNXSUTAWNEY — When it comes to the small town of Punxsutawney, one thing is for certain: It is a town where many do their best to lend a helping hand.

As the holiday season nears, we see the Make-A-Wish organization preparing to make the wishes of local children come true. We have the Toys for Tots program providing gifts for local children.

And now, the town has added another special something to its Christmas spirit — one for the elderly residents of Punxsy.

This year, for the first time, the Groundhog Club will be having a Holiday Elderly Care Gift Basket Drive.

The drive was created for the purpose of brightening up the holidays for the elderly residents residing in area nursing homes.

During the holiday seasons, a lot of the homes' residents can feel forgotten, especially as some have no families or anyone to visit them.

That's exactly why the Groundhog Club hopes that many will participate in this event by donating items that are listed on the facilities' "Wish Lists."

The items donated will go to the facilities, where they may be placed in the game rooms or lounge areas.

That way, all the residents may benefit from the gifts.

Some items on the wish lists include: books, puzzles, lotions, craft items, games and lots more.

You can receive a more detailed list by visiting the Chamber of Commerce at 102 West Mahoning St., by calling 814-938-7700, ext. 3 or by emailing

If you would like help out this wonderful cause, you may do so by bringing the items to the dropoff locations at The Chamber of Commerce and Shields Insurance.

The drive ends on Dec. 15, and items will be distributed around Christmas.
