Gertrude Ames, 93

Gertrude Ames, 93, Mayport, went to be with the Lord Thursday, March 8, 2012, at McKinley Health Center, Brookville.

She was born Aug. 15, 1918, in Oliver Township, Jefferson County, a daughter of the late Wilson and Edna (Brosius) Hoffman.

Feb. 29, 1936, she married Howard Ames, who preceded her in death July 2000.

Mrs. Ames was a lifetime member of the Langville Methodist Church, where she was treasurer for 55 years and enjoyed teaching Sunday School.

She enjoyed doing jigsaw puzzles with family and friends and spent many hours doing crossword puzzles and working in her large flower garden.

She loved spending time with her family and was an avid Pirates fan.

Her love of others was shown through her giving to charitable organizations, especially the Good Samaritan Project of Haiti.

Surviving relatives include two daughters, Shirley Sheesley and husband William and Carol Hawthorne and husband William, all of Brookville; a granddaughter, Judi Reitz and husband Rick of Brookville; a sister, Mildred Byerly of Summerville; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, James Ames; a great-grandson, Isaac Fraust; three brothers, Clyde Hoffman, Harry Hoffman and Russell Hoffman; and two sisters, Ethel Byerly and Flo Brosius.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the McKinney Funeral Home, Brookville.

A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, March 11, 2012, at the Ringgold United Methodist Church, Ringgold, with the Rev. Joan Rousseaux officiating.

Interment will be at the Langville Cemetery, Mayport.

The family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Langville Cemetery Association; the Good Samartian Project of Haiti, 7378 West Atlantic Blvd., Margate, Fla. 33063; Laurelbrooke Landing, c/o McKinley Health Center, 1 Laurelbrooke Dr., Brookville, Pa. 15825; or to the Clarion-Forest Visiting Nurses Association, 271 Perkins Rd., Clarion, Pa. 16214.
