George Steven Barenick, 90

George Steven Barenick, 90, Indiana, passed away Thursday, Oct. 18, 2012, at his residence.

He was born April 27, 1922, in Rossiter, Pa., a son of Parencik and Anna (Veselenak) Barenick.

George was employed for several years at U.S. Steel as a crane operator.

After his retirement from U.S. Steel, he continued to work as a carpenter and also provided maintenance for the railroad.

He served during World War II in the Army as a chauffeur for an Army major and general.

At one time, George was on the same ship as Winston Churchill.

While in Europe, George stayed in castles in Germany, France, England and Austria, and he also stayed in the Chateau used by George Washington.

George was an avid gardener and polka dancer who always enjoyed playing polka music.

He was also a member of the Punxsutawney Polka Booster Club, where he met his future wife.

Prior to his death, George had an opportunity to say goodbye to all his friends in Johnstown.

Surviving relatives include his wife, Marie (Schmieder) Barenick; three children; a sister; special friends from North Carolina, David and Ginny Spahr; and numerous relatives.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by many siblings.

Per his wishes, there will be no visitation.

Interment will be held at the Twin Valley Cemetery in Delmont.

A memorial service will be conducted at a later date.

Arrangements are under the direction of the The John A. Lefdahl Funeral Home, Indiana.
