George E. Johnson, 82

George E. Johnson, 82, of Burnside, Pa., died Tuesday, April 2, 2013, at the Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

The son of Burton and Sarah A. (Trevessick) Johnson, he was born on Jan. 15, 1931, in Juneau.

George was awarded the Purple Heart for his service in the U.S. Army as a PFC overseas during the Korean War.

For over 30 years, he was employed as an equipment operator for PennDOT.
George was a life member of Barnesboro VFW Post No. 343 and a member of Disabled American Veterans.

He greatly enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and especially
looked forward to going hunting and fishing with them. In more recent times, he also enjoyed caring for the neighborhood cats.

George married his wife, Sylvia R. (Beck) Johnson, on Jan. 29, 1955, and they shared over 58 years of marriage together.

He is survived by his wife, Sylvia, of Burnside; his four children, James F. Johnson of Kent, Pa., Kathy Yackuboskey and husband Bill of Homer City, Pa., Kim Fontanese of Clymer, Pa., and Ryan E. Johnson and Tracy A. of Valier, Pa.; four grandchildren, Missy Fontanese, Ricky Fontanese, Brayden Johnson and Carrie Johnson; and his brother, James Johnson and wife Lois of Mahaffey.

George was preceded in death by his parents; two grandsons, Nathan Yackuboskey and Clayton Johnson; his four brothers, William, Elijah, Phillip and Harvey Johnson; and his sister Mary Mae Pennington.

Family and friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, April 5, 2013, at the Rairigh Funeral Home, Ltd. in Hillsdale, Pa., where an 11 a.m. funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 6, 2013. Pastor Doug Brink will officiate.

Interment will be at the Burnside Cemetery, Burnside, Pa.
