Gary Lee Cooper, 76
Gary Lee Cooper, 76, Glen Campbell, died Thursday, July 7, 2011, at Miners Medical Center, Hastings.
He was born May 20, 1935, in Sunbury, a son of the late Rev. Albert C. and Elizabeth “Betty” S. (Clark) Cooper.
Feb. 23, 1963, he married Irene C. (Androsky) Cooper, who survives, of Glen Campbell.
Mr. Cooper served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict and then with the Combat Engineers.
He was employed as a heavy equipment operator for several local coal mining firms during his career, including Prushnok’s Arcadia Company; Selected Fuel, Inc. of Ramey; Tom Kraynak; Bill Lamkie; Red Gap Coal Co.; and the Hepburnia Coal Co.
He was of the Roman Catholic faith.
An outdoorsman, Mr. Cooper was a great hunter and fisherman. In his spare time, he also enjoyed farming and tinkering on lawn mowers, cars and trucks.
He was a man known for thinking of helping everyone else before himself.
In addition to his wife of 48 years, surviving relatives include a daughter, Elizabeth Ann (Cooper) Lechner and husband Kevin R. of Glen Campbell; a son, Gary Rhoades and wife Daren of Ligonier; five grandsons, Alexander L. and Lucas E. Lechner of Glen Campbell, and Kirk Rhoades and wife Denise and Shawn and Brandon Rhoades; two granddaughters, Anna Elizabeth Rhoades and Gracie Mae Rhoades; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Marie Richardson and husband Jim of Rochester Mills; and two brothers, Dan Cooper and wife Linda of Williamsport and Lou Cooper and wife Norma of Glen Campbell.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Cooper was preceded in death by a son, Lawrence Mark Cooper in 1965; and two brothers, Dave and Dick Cooper.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, July 10, 2011, at the Rairigh Funeral Home Ltd. in Hillsdale.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 11, 2011, at the funeral home with the Rev. Fr. Timothy J. Kruthaupt officiating.
Interment with the observance of military honors will follow at the Church of the Resurrection Cemetery in Glen Campbell.
