Jennifer Barr/The Punxsutawney Spirit This piece, titled “Go Fly a Kite,” will be among those on display in the exhibit, “From a Crooked Barn” by Brandi Elkin, Friday at Gallery 131, Pleasant Avenue.

Gallery 131, Pleasant Avenue, in Punxsy, owned by Delbert Highlands, has the entire upstairs dedicated to works by local artists, and will be the site of an exhibit, “From a Crooked Barn,” at 7 p.m. Friday by Brandi Elkin, who describes herself as an abstract artist with a twist.

While Elkin enjoyed drawing and coloring as a child, she continued her passion by taking art classes in high school. She plans to continue art education, possibly attending college.

Elkin said she was introduced to painting only four years ago through a summer job. However, it soon became a passion she now shares with others — not only locally, but throughout the United States.

Since selling her artwork online at www.paintingsilove.com/artist/brandielkin, Elkin has been able to get exposure as far away as England. Along with the artwork that she has displayed locally, she also has displays at Gallery 212 in Costa Mesa, Calif.

Among her various paintings, Elkin said she enjoys large-scale works, using acrylics and watercolors, as well as a lot of splatter art work.
While she believes that every painting she has done is personal and contains a story, Elkin said she is greatly influenced by artists such as Jackson Pollock, Chuck Close and Jasper Johns.

During the exhibit, Elkin will have pieces for sale, as well as books full of her work.

Elkin said she chose the name, “From a Crooked Barn,” simply because one of her inspirations, Pollock, had a studio named “The Crooked Barn.”

Her artwork will be on display for five weeks after Friday’s exhibit.
Highlands said he predicts a significant turnout Friday because, “She is pretty amazing.”
