Frederick James Acre, 75, of Anita, died Friday, Dec. 13, 2013, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.
He was born Sept. 16, 1938, in Punxsutawney, the son of the late Harold Frederick Acre and Georgeina (Hobba) Podgers, who survives and resides in Punxsutawney.
Fred served in the United States Air Force. He was very patriotic and proud of his service to our country.
On March 10, 1962, he married Helen Marlene Kuntz. They celebrated 50 loving years together.
He worked as a welder, first with Pittsburgh Des Moines Steel, and later for Jefferson Machine for over 25 years.
Fred was a very hard worker and was passionate about his work.
He was intrigued and curious about science, and he enjoyed learning interesting facts about the atmosphere and outer space.
He enjoyed creating weather vanes and windmills from various materials.
Fred loved his wife above all, and he enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by four children, Curtis J. Acre and wife Sheri of Punxsutawney, Lucinda "Cindy" K. Acre of Brockport, Darin Acre and wife Christy of DuBois and Kelly Carnahan and husband Stewart of Johnsonburg; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one half-brother, Robert Podgers and wife Paula of Punxsutawney; two half-sisters, Rita Gaston and husband Nick of Rochester Mills, and Margaret "Peggy" Bodenhorn and husband Lee of Punxsutawney.
He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Walter Podgers.
Friends will be received from 4 to 6 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2013, at Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc., Punxsutawney.
A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2013, at the funeral home, officiated by Pastor Doug Wolfe.
