Four big wins help Lady Chucks improve to 5-1

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsy ninth-grade girls' basketball team has definitely hit its stride, as the Lady Chucks won their fifth-straight game with a 59-3 victory over Clearfield Monday night in Punxsutawney.

The Lady Chucks (5-1) — who have all eighth-graders on their roster — didn't allow a point until the second half, leading 31-0 going into halftime. Punxsy kept up the pressure during the second half, outscoring the Lady Bisons 28-3 during the final two quarters.

Anna Horner had a huge game, scoring 20 points. Half of those 20 points were scored during the fourth quarter.

Nicole DiPietro had 12 points, and Jensen Constantino added 10 points, including eight in the third quarter. Kat Nestel chimed in with eight points.

The Lady Chucks concluded the 2010 portion of their schedule. Their next game isn't until 4 p.m. Jan. 4, 2011, in DuBois. The game in DuBois starts a four-game road trip for the Punxsy girls.

Punxsy ninth-grade girls 41, Clarion 18

CLARION — The Lady Chucks concluded an undefeated day at the Clarion Shootout last Saturday by downing host school Clarion, 41-18.

Punxsy's tenacious defense surrendered just four first-half points, allowing the team to lead 21-4 going into halftime.

The Lady Bobcats came back with a 12-point third quarter, but Punxsy closed them out with an 8-2 fourth stanza.

Anna Horner led all scorers with 12 points, with 10 occurring during the second half. She nailed a pair of three-pointers during the third quarter.

Shaina Painter and Jensen Constantino followed with seven points, Nicole DiPietro had six points and Allie Fye totaled five points.

Punxsy ninth-grade girls 40, Karns City 4

CLARION — Punxsy held Karns City to zero points during the final three quarters of a 40-4 rout during its second game of the Clarion Shootout last Saturday in Clarion.

The Lady Chucks were ahead 11-4 after one quarter when they outscored the Lady Gremlins by a 29-0 margin during the remainder of the contest.

Punxsy improved its shooting during the second half, hitting 12-of-22 shots after making 17 percent of its shot attempts during the first two quarters.

Allie Fye scored all of her game-high 10 points during the second half, and Jensen Constantino scored eight points.

Anna Horner and Shaina Painter had six points each, and Alyssa Reitz and Nicole DiPietro finished with four points apiece. Reitz nailed a three-pointer.

Karns City's only basket was a three-pointer during the first quarter.

Punxsy ninth-grade girls 37, Keystone 19

CLARION — A competitive game turned into a big Punxsy win during the Lady Chucks' first game of the Clarion Shootout last Saturday.

The Lady Chucks led 24-16 entering the final quarter when they scored 13 of the game's final 16 points to earn a 37-19 victory.
Nicole DiPietro had a team-best seven points. Shaina Painter and Kat Nestel scored six each, Allie Fye had five, and Jensen Constantino and Anna Horner both managed four.
