BILLIE JEAN KING

INDIANA — The Lively Arts of Indiana University of Pennsylvania's College of Fine Arts continued its annual lecture series Ideas and Issues with an appearance from former professional tennis player Billie Jean King, who has been credited with helping to tear down gender barriers in professional sports and elsewhere.

As a tennis player, King won a record 20 Wimbledon titles and took 39 Grand Slam singles, doubles and mixed doubles titles across the course of her career.

One of the most famous moments in her sports career was her victorious match against Bobby Riggs, referred to as the Battle of the Sexes.

The match, played on Sept. 29, 1973, is considered to have affected professional sports and society at large for the women's movement at the time.

King centered her presentation on what she said were the three key elements of success.
