VFW Post 9044 changed up its annual Flag Day observance in a number of ways Thursday evening at the War Memorial. First of all, the American Legion Montgomery Post 17 Band, under the direction of Captain Jack Averill, performed a number of patriotic and concert band standards, such as pieces by Irving Berlin, Robert Smith and George Cannon, as well as two pieces, “God of Our Fathers” and “Battle Hymn of the Republic” in tribute to Post 9044’s late past commander, James Soliday. Also, instead of one guest speaker, the event featured seven speakers, members of the Big Run Boy Scouts, who described what the U.S. flag means to them.
