ROSSITER — The cause of a garage fire that broke out in Rossiter early Saturday morning has yet to be determined.

The fire broke out in Emery Monoskey's garage around 6:30 a.m. Saturday on Center Street in Rossiter.

No one was injured.

However, heat from the garage fire caused minor damage to Monoskey's home, Joe Pisano Sr., fire chief of Rossiter's Volunteer Fire Company said.

Firefighters from Rossiter were the first to respond. Central Fire Department, Perry Township, Marion Center and Big Run also responded to the fire.

According to Pisano, there was a lot of fuel burning on the second floor of the garage, including shells and gun powder.

Pisano said Monoskey is a gun dealer.

"The upstairs was completely destroyed," Pisano said. "The fire destroyed a lot of stuff."

Although the fire destroyed the second floor of the garage, some items may be salvageable from the first floor, but Monoskey won't know that until the scene is inspected by the State Police Fire Marshal.

"What caused the fire is still undetermined," Pisano said. "The fire marshal will come out and investigate. We think we know where the fire started, but we don't know what started it. We also don't know if it was suspicious. Until then, the investigation is ongoing."

Big Run firefighters responded with their pumper/rescue which utilized the Compressed Air Foam System (CAFS) to prevent the fire from rekindling at a later time.

CAFS is a system used in firefighting to deliver fire retardant foam for the purpose of extinguishing a fire or protecting unburned areas from becoming involved in flame.

The system has been utilized by Big Run firefighters at numerous fires over the past year including: Anchor Inn, Caroline Street fires, Big Run Carpet and Little Canada.

CAFS has aided in preventing fires from rekindling, sometimes an entire day after the flames had been extinguished by fire crews.

Firefighters were on the scene until about 12:30 p.m.
