Fire crews respond to storage building fire Friday

Punxsutawney firefighters managed to knock down a fire before it got started in a building that was used for storage by Brian Horner's HPS Tire on South Gilpin Street extension, Punxsutawney, at 9:47 p.m. Friday.

When firefighters arrived on the scene, a small fire was discovered in back of the brick structure that is located across from Horner's business.

Foam was used by Elk Run's engine to smother the potential blaze.

Smoke had entered into the other portions of the building that were used for storage. Bryan Smith, Punxsutawney Fire Department chief said Horner had been cutting rebar with a torch in the rear portico/garage area and had wet the area down before and after, but the fire rekindled. There were no injuries and no damage.

Firefighters were assisted at the scene by the Punxsutawney Borough Police and Jefferson County EMS.
