(Editorâs note: This piece is one in a series of âFamiliar Faces Fridayâ features to be written by Spirit reporter Destiny Pifer. The point of the project will be to highlight a member of the community who may be recognizable to many and tell his or her story. Todayâs familiar face is Bob Long.)
PUNXSUTAWNEY â If youâre familiar with the town of Punxsutawney, Bob Long may be a familiar face.
You may recognize him as one of the pizza delivery drivers from Foxâs Pizza, or perhaps as one of the managers.
He always greets the customers with a smile and is kind to everyone he meets.
Born and raised in Anita, he is a graduate of Punxsutawney Area High School, as a member of the Class of 2000.
In 2005, he earned his bachelorâs degree in business administration from the Penn State DuBois campus. Long said that, at first, he started working toward his associateâs degree, but then decided to go on and earn his bachelorâs.
âI took up business administration, because I felt that it was a pretty broad field,â said Long.
For the past 11 years, Long has been working at Foxâs Pizza Den in Punxsy.
âI have been able to apply what I learned in college to my job,â he said.
Long said one of the benefits of working at Foxâs is that it has allowed him to stay closer to his family. The flexible schedule allowed him to care for his father, who, unfortunately, passed away in March.
âMy dad was my best friend in the whole world, and losing him was difficult,â Long said, adding that God has given him the strength for each new day.
âWith flexibility, I could take him to doctorâs appointments,â said Long. âI was able to do what I needed to do.â
His boss, Scott Anthony, owner of Foxâs Pizza Den, has been very good about allowing a flexible schedule.
As a delivery driver, Long has been able to go out into the community and meet all kinds of different people.
âI love the delivery aspect of the job,â said Long. âI do a lot of deliveries, but I also do some kitchen work.â
His job offers a variety of daily tasks, which he said keeps him motivated.
After 11 years of hard work, Long earned the title of manager.
As one of the managers, he not only makes deliveries but also does other assignments.
âOn Tuesday mornings, I do the inventory, unload the trucks and put things away,â said Long.
He said that though he may not have a job in his field of study, so to speak, he has been able to utilize his degree.
Though undecided on whether he will ever pursue the path of a business owner, one thing is for certain â he is happy.
âI have learned a lot from being here for so many years,â Long said.
Working alongside Anthony has given him a chance to learn what itâs like to run a business.
He has learned how a small business runs, as well as the aspects and responsibilities that come with it.
Content with the working environment, Long likes his job, and he likes the people he works with.
âI have good co-workers and a great boss,â said Long.
While working at Foxâs, he has helped out with the Pizza and Prevention fundraisers.
He also helps out every year with the annual Make-a-Wish campaign.
He is a member of the First Assembly Church of God in Walston.
In Longâs spare time, he enjoys doing home improvements inside and outside of his home. He has found a passion in doing landscaping.
âI just got into it a few years ago, and I really enjoy it.â
He loves dining out and going bowling.
An avid traveler, he has been to 49 of the 50 states.
His greatest love is his family, whom he remains close to.
âI love to spend time with my family and friends,â said Long.
