Evelyn D. (Wise) McElwain, 86

Evelyn D. (Wise) McElwain, 86, of Big Run, died Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2011, at Brookville Hospital.

She was born Oct. 12, 1924, in Punxsutawney, a daughter of the late Clair and Linnie (Black) Fetterman.

April 21, 1946, she married James L. Wise, who preceded her in death April 17, 1984. She then married Elmer Joseph McElwain June 13, 1998, who preceded her in death in 2001.

Mrs. McElwain worked and retired from Arco Speer Carbon in Elk Run.

She enjoyed flowers, gardening and bowling. She was a member of the American Legion Auxilliary Post 62 in Punxsutawney.

Mrs. McElwain was a Gold Star mother, as her sonm, James L. Wise Jr., was killed in Vietnam.

Surviving relatives include three daughters, Donna Grove of Beaver, Janet L. Wise of Big Run and Gloria J. Osborne of Nevada; a son, Thomas C. Wise and wife Nancy of Anita; a step-son, Charles McElwain and wife Josephine of Big Run; five grandchildren, Dawn Gillin, James and Jason Barber, Mary Ann Brown and Michael Wise; six great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Lorraine “Scott” Fetterman and wife Marian, and Kenneth Fetterman, all of Punxsutawney.

In addition to her parents, husbands and son, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Harry, Ernest, James and Irvin “Chub” Fetterman; four sisters, Mary Green, Virginia Jones, Georgia Enterline and Norma Jean “Bubbles” Witherow; a grandson, David J. Grove; and a son-in-law, Wayne Osborne.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Shumaker Funeral Home Inc., Punxsutawney. 

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Sept. 9, 2011, at the funeral home with Joseph Buterbaugh officiating.

Interment will follow at the American Legion Plot, Circle Hill Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made in honor of her husbands, James L. Wise or E.L. “Joe” McElwain.
