EuGene “Gene” Ferra, 94

EuGene Donald Ferra, 94, of Punxsutawney, passed away Friday, July 11, 2014, at home, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born Dec. 21, 1919, in Punxsutawney, a son of the late Carmen and Carmella (Cappella) Ferra.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Josephine E. (Longo) Ferra.

On July 9, 1955, he married the former Marjorie Anderson, who survives.

Mr. Ferra was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, being in Co. K – 76th Infantry Division.

He fought in France, Luxembourg and Germany, where he was wounded.

He was a life member of the American Legion Post 62 and VFW Post 813.

He owned and operated “Gene’s Transmission Service” in Punxsutawney and was co-owner of Hilltop Mobile Homes and Main Street Video. He will be greatly missed by those who knew him.

He was fortunate to have the luxury of remaining at home in the exceptional, loving care of his family and DuBois Regional Medical Center Hospice until his passing.

He is survived by seven children, Claire Canton and husband Albert of New Castle; EuGene R. “Gino” Ferra and wife Milinda of Huntington Beach, California; John Ferra of Bellview, Florida; Kevin D. Ferra and Colin Ferra of Punxsutawney; Karen Bly and husband Michael of DuBois; and Kirwin Ferra of Long Island, New York; his “adopted” daughter, Amy Schwabenbauer of Weedville; 13 grandchildren, Nicole Calabrese, Rachel Hughes, Mary Canton, Kyle Carpenter, Hayden Carpenter, Garrett Shaffer, Michael Stunkard, Ethan Stunkard, Jade Ferra, Kevin T. Ferra, Kalista Ferra, Sammi Bly and Emily Bly; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great- great-grandchild.
He is also survived by two brothers, Carmen Ferra and Donald Ferra, Jr.; two sisters, Consetta Esposito and Kathryn Blose; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; two brothers, John and wife Sylvia Ferra and Donald and wife Gladys (Bailey) Ferra, Sr.; and two sisters, Theresa and husband Ralph Bianco and Marie and husband Arthur Candiotti; two brothers-in-law, John Blose and Emilio “Curly” Exposito; and one sister-in-law, Mary (Demcuk) Ferra.

Friends and family will be received from noon to 3 p.m., Monday, July 14, 2014, at the Richard L. Fait Funeral Home in Punxsutawney.

A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. with Pastor David Bish officiating.

Military honors will be accorded by the Jefferson County Veterans Honor Guard.

There will be no burial service at this time. Interment will be private at the Ferra family plot.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Gene’s memory to DRMC Hospice or an organization of the donor’s choice.
