Esther Jane Powell, 75

Esther Jane Powell, 75, Punxsutawney (Porter), died Sunday, May 29, 2011, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

She was born July 6, 1935, in Punxsutawney, a daughter of the late Howard W. and Helen Marie (Kromer) Yeaney.

June 5, 1953, she married Laird H. Powell, who survives, of Porter.
Mrs. Powell was a member of the North Freedom United Methodist Church until she moved to Porter and became a member of the Porter United Methodist Church.

She was the co-owner of Powells’ General Store in North Freedom for 20 years.

She belonged to the New Bethlehem Chapter No. 230 Order of the Eastern Star. She also taught Sunday School and helped out at several personal care homes. Mrs. Powell was a loving, giving and caring person who never sent anyone away hungry, and she was a friend to all she met. She enjoyed being around her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and watching her grandchildren’s ball games.

In addition to her husband, surviving relatives include two sons, Douglas Powell of North Freedom and Donald Powell and wife Candi of Ringgold; five grandchildren, Erica Mingle and husband Ed, Marci Reitz and husband Adam, Charles Powell and wife Jaci, Taylor Powell and Jordyn Powell; one brother, Howard “Howdy” Yeaney and wife Donna of Reynoldsville; two sisters, Marilyn Himes and husband Pete of Huntingdon and Debbie Porter and companion Mike Smith of Punxsutawney; a sister-in-law, Donna Yeaney of Punxsutawney; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers; Bob Yeaney and Bill Yeaney; and a daughter-in-law, Roxie Powell.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, June 2, 2011, at the Deeley Funeral Home, Punxsutawney. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 3, 2011, at the funeral home with Pastor Joan Rousseaux officiating.

Interment will be in the Zion Cemetery in Porter Township.

Arrangements are in the care of the Alcorn Funeral Home of Hawthorn.
