Ernest Eugene Certo, 88

Ernest Eugene Certo, 88, of Punxsutawney, died Sunday, July 14, 2013,
at Jefferson Manor, Brookville.

He was born May 5, 1925, in Punxsutawney, a son of the late Joseph and Grace (Spader) Certo.

He was a Navy Seaman 1st Class, serving during World War II on the USS Saratoga, which sailed the Pacific and Northwest Pacific.

The ship was bombed by Japanese Kamikaze pilots off the shores of Iwo Jima; many men perished that day, and Seaman Certo was one of the wounded.

He was the recipient of the Purple Heart and other medals during his service in the United States Navy.

He was a member of Saints Cosmas and Damian Catholic Church.

On Nov. 20, 1948, he married the former Annabelle L. McCluskey. She survives.

Ernie was the owner of a small engine repair shop. He was well known as "Fox" by many who stopped by his garage over the years to share a good time and discuss many of his Punxsutawney memories.

He was a member of the Punxsutawney Country Club and VFW.

His enjoyments were fishing, hunting, golfing, mushroom hunting and just being outdoors with friends.

In addition to his wife, Annabelle, he is survived by two sons, Ernest Certo, Jr. and wife Barb of Punxsutawney and Gary Certo and wife
Karen of Pittsburgh; five grandchildren, Lisa Certo-Card and husband Greg, Christopher Certo and wife Jessie, Carrie Ann Certo, Melanie Certo-Gavin and husband Michael and Diane Certo; seven great-grandchildren, Vincent, Alexander, Dominic, Nathan, Aubin, Caydin and Keane; and one sister, Angie Barkley of Punxsutawney.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers, Joseph, Peter and Arduine Certo.

Friends will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 16, 2013, at Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc., Punxsutawney.

A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 17, 2013, at Saints Cosmas and Damian Catholic Church, officiated by Monsignor Joseph Riccardo.

Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery.

Full military honors will be accorded.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Mr. Certo's memory to the Family Hospice of Punxsutawney, 1464 North Main St., Punxsutawney, PA 15767.
