Edwin L. Snyder, Jr., 88, Rochester Mills, died Thursday, Sept. 12, 2013, at home.

He was born April 22, 1925, in Homer City, a son of the late Edwin L. and Freda L. (Wells) Snyder.

On Jan. 26, 1952, he married Virginia C. (Carter) Snyder, who preceded him in death on Aug. 22, 2010.

He was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Punxsutawney.

He grew up in the home of his grandmother, Martha Long Snyder, and his father near Rochester Mills.

He graduated from Marion Center High School Class of 1942 and went on to serve in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

After serving in the U.S. Navy, he graduated from Michigan School of Liberal Arts in 1949 and the University of Pittsburgh School of Law in 1952.

Following law school, he practiced law within the Punxsutawney area and was elected Judge of the Court of Common Pleas of Jefferson County, where he served as President Judge for over 20 years.

He also served as a specially appointed Senior Judge for 13 years in various other courts in Western Pennsylvania.

He was an active member of the Pennsylvania Bar Association and the Pennsylvania Conference of State Trial Judges during his judicial service.

Surviving relatives include two sons, Mitchell Thomas Snyder of Coweta, Okla., and Edwin J. Snyder and partner Larry Brandts of Minneapolis; a daughter, Polly Legenza and husband Rick of Medina, Ohio; companion Betty Mabon; eight grandchildren, Mat Snyder, Sandie Barns, Brian Snyder, Madison Snyder, Sara Jonckheere, Erin Surprise and Hanna and Sam Legenza; a niece, Sheryl Sasala; a nephew, Jim Sutton; and four great0grandchildren, Alexander Snyder, Eliot and Carter Surprise and Cooper Barns.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters.

Friends will be received from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday, Sept. 16, 2013, at the Deeley Funeral Home, Punxsutawney.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2013, at the Presbyterian Church of Punxsutawney, with the Reverend Brett Swanson officiating.

Interment will be at Pine Grove Cemetery, Rochester Mills.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made, in memory of Mr. Snyder, to the Presbyterian Church of Punxsutawney.
