Edward L. Vitko, 92

Edward L. Vitko, 92, of Indiana, formerly of Adrian, died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012, at home at Clairvaux Commons in Indiana.

He was born Dec. 29, 1919, in Big Soldier, a son of the late Joseph and Mary (Kowack) Vitko. He was the last member of his immediate family.

Mr. Vitko was a U.S. Army veteran serving during World War II, where he earned the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal.

On May 4, 1946, he married Clara Elizabeth Jarbeck. She preceded him in death on May 27, 2006.

He worked as a machinist in Buffalo, N.Y., and later did custodial work at the Jefferson County Courthouse and Keystone National Bank in Punxsutawney.

Edward enjoyed the many friends he made while residing at Clairvaux Commons. He also enjoyed walking and playing cards, and he previously enjoyed playing piano.

Surviving relatives include a daughter, Andrea Nicolo and husband Henry of Homer City; and two grandsons who were the joy of his life, Joseph and Michael Nicolo.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Michael E. Vitko; five brothers, Joseph, Paul, John, Frank and Albert Vitko; and two sisters, Mary Pagonk and Sophie Hlavna.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc., Punxsutawney.

A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2012, at St. Adrian Catholic Church, officiated by Monsignor Riccardo.

Interment will follow at the Adrian-Anita Roman Catholic Cemetery, McCalmont Township.
