E. Eugene (Gene) Elbel, 82, Punxsutawney, died Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2012, at home.

He was born Jan. 27, 1929, in Rossiter, a son of the late Edward and Alice (Smith) Elbel.

June 25, 1949, he married Dorothy E. (Smith) Elbel, who survives. They were married 62 years.

Mr. Elbel enjoyed gardening, hunting, traveling and watching sports.
He was retired as a heavy equipment operator.

In addition to his wife, surviving relatives include three daughters, Barbara Cogley and husband Homer of Bonneau, S.C., Deborah Elbel of Monroeville and Sandra Scott and husband Kenton of Punxsutawney; a daughter-in-law, Patricia Elbel and fiance Lance Walker of Punxsutawney; two brothers, George Elbel and wife Dorothy of New York, and Jay Elbel and wife Nancy of Rossiter; a sister, Mary Justice of Oliveburg; three sisters-in-law, Kay Heckman and husband Harold of Shelocta, Linda Elbel of Chambersburg and Dorothy Elbel of Punxsutawney; eight grandchildren, Steven Cogley and wife Cindy, Cathy Purdue, Patrick Hanlon and fiancee Kim Chappel, George Elbel, Jill Elbel, Alyssa Wright and husband Andrew, Clark Elbel and wife Melinda and Bryan Baughman; several nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Julie Brown, and two special nephews, Vince and Edward Elbel; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, George E. Elbel, a daughter, Beverly E. Elbel; a grandson, Colton E. Baughman; and two brothers, Glenn Elbel and Emory Elbel.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, 2012, at the Deeley Funeral Home, Punxsutawney.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 27, 2012, at the funeral home with the Rev. Tim Spence officiating.

Interment will be at Brickell Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Elbel's memory to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association.
