BROCKWAY — Sports seasons many times have signature wins, and the Punxsy girls' soccer squad hopes Monday night was one of its 2012 moments. Sydney Dubensky booted the game-winner for the Lady Chucks to give them a 2-1 victory over the Lady Rovers of Brockway.

"It was the best game I have seen the them play yet," Punxsy head coach Kevin Hughes said about the match. "We started using what we have been working on in practice, and it showed on the field today."

The victory takes the Lady Chucks to 2-4 on the year and gives the team its first win since defeating Smethport, 2-0, in the second match for the team in the Punxsy Tournament that began the season on Sept. 1st.

With a newly tied game, 1-1, five minutes before, midfielder Emily Horner hit a through ball into the middle of the field where Dubensky took it and connected on a 10-yard hard shot straight on and watched it fly past the Brockway keeper for what would be the game-winner and 2-1 final 15 minutes later.

"This is a key win to hopefully set up the rest of the week mentally for us," explained Hughes. "We have two big matches with Curwensville and Brookville this week, and this starts the week off in a great way."

In the 25th minute of a scoreless opening half, Punxsy lofted the game's first goal into the net. On a corner kick, Ashley Bacha hit the ball to the front of the goal where Marissa McQuire flicked it over the keeper into the far post for the 1-0 score.

Trailing 1-0 midway through the second half, Brockway saw its star player Julie Esposito put the home team on the board. Esposito was able to get around a few Punxsy defenders and hit the game-tying score to make it 1-1 to set up the Dubensky heroics five minutes later.

"We wanted to shut down Esposito, and it was key for our defense to do this," said Hughes. "We were possession dominant, but Brockway did outshoot us. The big thing was their shooters were trying from 30 yards out due to our defensive pressure."

On the defense, Lady Chucks' goalie Alli Fye registered 10 saves.

Punxsy will have a day off to enjoy the victory before it hosts Curwensville on Wednesday starting at 4 p.m. and then travels to Brookville for a 10 a.m. Saturday affair.
