Dr. George Sabarich, 87

Dr. George Sabarich, 87, Punxsutawney, died Wednesday, March 21, 2012, at home.

He was born May 21, 1924, in the Sykesville area mining town of Cascade, a son of Croatian immigrants, the late Nik and Antonija (Godinic) Sabaric.

An industrious person since youth, Dr. Sabarich owned his own Atlantic gas station in Sykesville, while still attending high school.

His Sykesville High graduation was followed by employment in Niagara Falls.

He served in the U.S. Navy “SeaBees” in New Guinea during World War II.

Dec. 25, 1947, he married the former Dolly Snyder, who preceded him in death Aug. 18, 2004.

He attended Penn State, and pursued education in St. Louis, Mo., at Logan College of Chiropractic.

He was a chiropractor in Punxsutawney for 41 years.

He was a member of the American Chiropractic Association, John W. Jenks Masonic Lodge, the Shriners, the American Legion and the Croatian Fraternal Union.

Dr. Sabarich enjoyed reading, art and the outdoors, especially organic gardening and wandering his woods.

Surviving relatives include a daughter, GeorgiAnne Sabaric of Stroudsburg; a sister, Kathryn Stankavich of Ravenna, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Nick Sabarich; and a sister, Mary (Max) Neal.

There will be no visitation.

Arrangements are under the direction of Shumaker Funeral Home Inc., Punxsutawney.

Memorial donations may be made in Dr. Sabarich’s memory to the Punxsutawney Memorial Library.
