Dr. Douglas P. MacMillan, 87

Dr. Douglas P. MacMillan, 87, died Sunday, Jan. 1, 2012, in Punxsutawney.

He was born June 22, 1924, in Erie, a son of the late Andy and Verdie (MacFarland) MacMillan.

He grew up in Meadville.

Aug, 25, 1945, he married his childhood sweetheart, the former Martha Waelde, who survives, of Meadville.

After graduating from Meadville High School, Dr. MacMillan was accepted as a cadet in the U.S. Army Air Force and received his pilot wings in 1943.

As a first pilot on a B24, he flew all of his 44 combat missions in the South Pacific and was awarded the air medal with three oak leaf clusters.

Dr. MacMillan graduated from Ohio State University School of Optometry and began his optometric practice in Punxsutawney in 1952. A lifetime member of the Pennsylvania Optometric Association and the American Optometric Association, he retired in 2002.

Dr. MacMillan was an avid golfer who belonged to the Punxsutawney Country Club; a pilot who belonged to the Aircraft Owners Pilot Association; a charter member and the original secretary of the Punxsutawney Booster Club; a life member of the B.P.O. Elks No. 301; and a past president of the Punxsutawney Rotary Club.

In addition to his wife, surviving relatives include two sons, Scott MacMillan of Daytona Beach, Fla., and Kevin MacMillan and wife Betty Goldstein of Richmond, Va.; a daughter, Sandy Dunn and husband Joe of Holden, Mass.; and eight grandsons.

In addition to his parents, Dr. MacMillan was preceded in death by his two older brothers, Clyde and Nova MacMillan.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Jan, 4, 2012, at the Deeley Funeral Home, Punxsutawney.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 5, 2012, at the funeral home with the Rev. Msgr. Joseph Riccardo officiating.

Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery.
