Dorothy L. Shirey, 93, Tanyard (Mayport), died Monday, June 25, 2012, at Clarion Hospital.
She was born June 19, 1919, in New Salem, a daughter of Boyd O. and A. Maude (Doverspike) Kunselman.
Nov. 25, 1937, she married J. Russell Shirey, who preceded her in death Nov. 16, 1988.
Mrs. Shirey will be remembered by her family and friends as a loving, giving, talented woman. She always had a welcoming smile and enjoyed visits from hundreds of folks to her home over the years.
She first attended the two-room schoolhouse in New Salem and then graduated from Hawthorn.
She walked seven miles daily, and many times, the boy she would marry would come by in his car and offer her a ride home.
Mrs. Shirey was an active participant in the New Salem United Methodist Church her entire life. She served the church in multiple capacities during her 80-year membership. She taught herself to play the piano, and one of her many joys was playing for church services and teaching her sons to sing.
Her deep Christian faith sustained her through a long, full life, and she always looked forward to seeing her loved ones once again in heaven.
This past year, she was able to again share her talents with her new friends at her home in Edgewood Heights.
As a career homemaker, Mrs. Shirey relished the joys of making clothes for her children, making many quilts as graduation gifts, canning fruits and vegetables and preparing meals.
Her greatest joy was to sit with family and friends and share stories of the past; she was the family historian.
She worked for more than 10 years in the Mayport Post Office and also served as secretary to the New Salem Cemetery for many years.
She sponsored a yearly camping trip with the entire family and was always ready for a trip to visit family and friends.
