Dorothy “Ockie” Joyce Shaffer, 76

Dorothy “Ockie” Joyce Shaffer, 76, Rossiter, died Sunday, Oct. 16, 2011, at UPMC-Presbyterian, Pittsburgh.

She was born Sept. 4, 1935, in Rossiter, a daughter of the late Levi and Ethel (DeHart) Shaffer.

She worked in housekeeping at Havrilla’s Personal Care Home in Rossiter for the past seven years. She will be remembered as a kind and conscientious person. She had previously worked at Green Acres Personal Care Home and at Rola-Jensen.

Miss Shaffer played baseball for the Rossiter Miners baseball team in her earlier years. She later loved to watch baseball games, and wasn’t afraid to give her “advice” to those who needed it. She was a true fan of the team.

She was a social member of the Rossiter Veterans' Club.

Surviving relatives include three brothers, John R. Shaffer, Virgil Shaffer, and Gordon Shaffer and wife Gloria, all of Rossiter; and a sister, Gwendolyn Shaddock of DuBois.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia Shaffer and Donna Humble; and eight brothers, Robert, Donald, Harry, Levi Jr., Lorne, James, Marlin and Mahlon Shaffer.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2011, at Shumaker Funeral Home Inc., Punxsutawney.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, 2011, at the funeral home with the Rev. Tim Bowser officiating.

Interment will be in Union Hill Cemetery, Rossiter.

Memorial donations may be made in Ockie’s memory to the Rossiter baseball team, 330 Central St., Rossiter, Pa. 15772.
