ST. MARYS — Joey DiPietro threw 5 1/3 scoreless innings, and Jacob Tyger hit a two-run home run during the Punxsy Little League baseball All-Stars' 5-0 tournament-opening victory Monday night at St. Marys.

DiPietro surrendered just two hits, Punxsy didn't commit an error, and Punxsy's five hits came from four players during a total team effort.

"It was fantastic with a great roundabout effort. Everybody pitched in offensively and defensively," Punxsy manager Joe DiPietro said. "We played this team in past years in some postseason tournaments, and we knew coming into the game they were an extremely well coached and well disciplined team."

Punxsy will now play at 6 p.m. Wednesday in Ridgway. On the other side of the winners' bracket, DuBois will play at Brookville. DuBois beat Brockway, 24-2, in four innings, and Brookville defeated Reynoldsville/Sykesville, 13-1, in five innings.

Joey DiPietro struck out five and walked two. He didn't allow a base runner to reach third base.

"I'm very proud of the way he went out there. They were very aggressive at the plate," manager DiPietro said. "He had great control and worked inside and out. He rarely gave them a great pitch to hit."

Peyton Graham pitched the final two-thirds of an inning and allowed one hit.

Offensively, Ethan Riley went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Lucas Ambler and Dylan Huey also doubled.

Punxsy scored its first two runs in the second inning when Huey doubled and was driven home by Tyger's two-run homer. Riley doubled and scored on an error in the third inning, and Devin Kelly and Josh Smith each scored in the fourth.

Manager DiPietro said his team will be ready for another road test Wednesday in Ridgway.

"We're upbeat and have some confidence going into Game 2," he said. "We're going to go right back to work tomorrow and try to come out the same way we did against St. Marys."
