HOLLIDAYSBURG — Nine girls had a hit, and starting pitcher Randa Depp gave up one run through the first five innings Monday during the Punxsy softball team's 8-5 victory in Hollidaysburg.

The Lady Chucks are off to a 4-0 start behind an offense that hit up and down the lineup and a pitcher who didn't give up much early in the game.

Depp, a junior, was impressive during a complete-game effort that included nine strikeouts. She allowed five runs on six hits with one walk, but the Lady Golden Tigers didn't score their second run until the Lady Chucks were ahead 8-1 through 5 1/2-innings.

Shawnna Crago drove in three runs, Jenna Reitz doubled home a pair, both Hannah Giavedoni and Tia Davis tripled, Megan Muth doubled and Ashley Barenchik scored twice.

Punxsy scored first during the first inning, starting with a leadoff walk drawn by Barenchik. She scored later on a sacrifice fly by Crago.

Hollidaysburg tied the game at one on a solo homer by Biz Carter during the second inning, but the Lady Golden Tigers had just one other hit during the first five innings.

Punxsy pushed ahead with a four-run third inning. The Lady Chucks loaded the bases early in the inning when Megan Muth was walked, Barenchik reached on an error and Taylor Powell was hit by a pitch. Muth and Barnechik scored on Crago's two-run single, and Powell and Crago came home on Reitz's two-run double to help Punxsy take a 5-1 lead.

The lead swelled to 6-1 in the fourth inning once Kristen Fedder singled, Muth doubled and Powell drove home Fedder with a single.

Punxsy's final runs came in the fifth inning, as Ashley Couser's two-out, pinch-hit single was followed by an RBI triple by Hannah Giavedoni and an RBI single by Barenchik.

Depp struggled through 2 1/3-innings last Thursday against Altoona, allowing four runs on five hits with two walks. Only her fastball was working that game.

Punxsy manager Alan Pifer said that Depp was consistent with three pitches Monday, and that improved command created troubles for Hollidaysburg.

Ashley Creamer and Hannah Mercer were each 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI for Hollidaysburg. Kelsey Salyards also singled and drove home a run.

Salyards pitched a complete game, surrendering eight runs on nine hits with six walks and nine strikeouts.

Punxsy's win over Hollidaysburg started a busy week for the Lady Chucks. Punxsy will visit State College and Brookville the next two days before hosting DuBois Thursday in a game that was rescheduled from last Wednesday after a rainout.
