Delinquent sewer bill holders can expect notices

January 12, 2012

WALSTON — Wednesday, the Young Township Board of Supervisors warned that the sewer customers with the highest delinquent balances, who have not made payment arrangements, will soon receive notices from the district judge regarding their account.

“We’re going to take five delinquent customers at a time to the district judge,” Secretary/Treasurer Mary Ann Redding said Wednesday.

Chairman Andrew Meterko, said other delinquent customers might make arrangements once they see that other customers with delinquent bills are taken to the district judge.

Redding said the township sent the top-five delinquent accounts certified letters and another sewer bill invoice to allow them the opportunity to make arrangements to catch up on their bills.

Meterko said the township is making some progress on the delinquency, which was once as high as $52,000, and now has dropped to about $48,000.

Redding said the delinquent customers who won’t make arrangements or fail to appear in court will have a lien placed against their property.

“If they attempt to sell their property, they’ll find out about the lien, which will have to be satisfied before it’s released,” she said.

Also Wednesday, supervisors:

• Approved PennSafe Building Inspection Services as the new building inspectors for the township.

Meterko said the reason for the change from the Bureau of Veritas is due to the constant turnover of inspectors who have left Veritas, many of which now work for PennSafe.

“PennSafe is more local than Veritas, which is a national company,” Meterko said, adding that PennSafe will assume the inspection duties March 1, since Veritas requires a 30-day notice to cancel the contract.

• Approved their annual $1,000 donation to the Punxsutawney Memorial Library.

• Approved the payment of all bills and payroll.

In other business:

• A fireworks permit and road closing permit was issued to the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club for Groundhog Day, Feb. 2.

• Supervisors will soon discuss possible projects for the township’s Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program.

Projects must be submitted to the Jefferson County Department of Development by 4 p.m. Jan. 27.

• The PennDOT Harmony Bridge Project has a notice to proceed as of Jan. 30.

Meterko said the township has not received the final cost for the construction of sewer lines under both bridges that are going to be replaced by PennDOT.

The township hasn’t received the final cost from Keller Engineers for both projects, which is estimated to be $95,000, he said.

• In the roadmaster’s report, Meterko said township workers plowed, salted and placed anti-skid several times during the few snow events experienced this winter.

Crews have also patched and filled pot holes when possible.

• The supervisors wanted to clarify that Kenneth P. McFarland, II was appointed to the township vacancy board at the township reorganization meeting.

• Supervisors received a thank-you letter for their donation of $2,000 to the McCalmont Township Volunteer Fire Company for the first responder emergency medical service it provides township residents.

• Meterko said all of the old township equipment that was purchased by John Yenzi from the auction has been removed from the maintenance facility, and only the title to the grader is left to be changed.

The next supervisor’s public voting meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8, at the township building.
