Deeley invites Obama, but Obama postpones PSU trip
PUNXSUTAWNEY — The invitation was there, but now the trip is postponed.
So much for having President Barack Obama as a guest at Groundhog Day 2011.
After reports last week that Obama would visit Penn State the same day as Groundhog Day, Inner Circle President Bill Deeley said Monday he extended an invitation to the president through U.S. Rep. Glenn Thompson’s office.
“I said, ‘Fax, or e-mail or call and invite Barack Obama,’” Deeley said. “He’s going to be in State College, so why not come and do Groundhog Day day with us.”
Monday night, however, the White House said Obama was postponing his trip to Penn State until Thursday due to — get this — “inclement weather.”
Last Thursday, the White House Office of Media Affairs issued a statement saying Obama would travel to “central Pennsylvania,” and that further details would follow. Friday, the White House updated its Thursday statement, saying that Obama would visit Penn State University.
Inner Circle Vice-President Mike Johnston said Friday if Obama were coming, the Groundhog Club would have known about it weeks before, and that “We would have been inundated with Secret Service for the past two weeks.”
“Well, he’s not coming then,” Deeley said Monday night. “We’ll catch him next year.”
