David Paul Mottorn

July 19, 2011

With heavy hearts, we bid goodbye to father, husband and friend David Paul Mottorn. July 16, 2011, Dave died suddenly, but doing something he loved best, biking along the Freeport-Butler Trail.

Dave was a great lover of nature and a great storyteller. Frequently, these passions came together, when he would spin an entertaining tale along a hiking trail or while dipping his kayak’s oar into the water. He loved singing, too, but his wry mantra, “If you don’t sing good, sing loud,” should be an indicator of his choral abilities.

He possessed a green thumb and took great pride in his vegetable garden, which grew bigger every year, though he was flummoxed with what to do with his turnips.

He was a passionate reader, especially of U.S. history, international politics and biographies, and held great interest in current events. He started every morning reading newspapers and blogs, and frequently shared articles that resonated with him to an extensive group of friends and acquaintances.

He leaves behind his wife of 43 years, Loreen, of Murrysville; daughter Amanda, of Edgewood Boro; daughter Jill, son-in-law David and grandson Caleb of Cheverly, Md.; and sister Virginia Louise Maine of Marchand. He is predeceased by parents Jacob Paul Mottorn and Agnes Capitola (Armstrong) Mottorn and sister Sarah (Sally) Hopkins.

Dave was born in Punxsutawney July 11, 1940. Upon graduation from Clarion State College, Dave joined the U.S. Air Force. He was honored with the Bronze Star for his service during the Vietnam War. He retired as a lieutenant colonel from the U.S. Air Force Reserves in 1990.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be sent to one of four organizations to which Dave was devoted: The Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, the East Suburban Unitarian Universalist Church in Murrysville, the Salvation Army and the Wounded Warrior Project.

We welcome all who wish to say goodbye to Dave to join us for a memorial to be held from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the East Suburban Unitarian Universalist Church in Murrysville.
