David H. Burkett, 62, Punxsutawney, died Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.
He was born March 16, 1949, in Punxsutawney, a son of the late Kermit F. and Earlajane (Jones) Burkett.
Mr. Burkett was a loving and devoted husband to his wife, Karen Kent, whom he married July 14, 1973, as well as a loving and devoted father to the other true love of his life, his daughter, Kelly Rieth, both of whom survive.
Mr. Burkett was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving from 1968 until 1972, during the Vietnam War. He was a crew member on the flight deck of the U.S.S. Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Following his discharge from the Navy, he was employed at Dominion Oil & Gas as a utility man for 31 years. He retired seven years ago, enjoying having "every day as a Saturday."
Mr. Burkett was a member of the ASPCA and always had a love for animals.
He enjoyed anything to do with the outdoors, welding and tinkering in his garage.
He loved riding his Polaris Ranger RZR.
In addition to his wife and daughter, surviving relatives include his mother-in-law, Eleanor Kent of Punxsutawney; a sister, Sandy Kaheny of New Port Richey, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Debra Kent and Dave Reddinger of Punxsutawney; a brother-in-law, Ronald Kent and wife Terri; and nieces and nephews Erin and Charlie Morelli, Tara and Chris Williams, Billy and Lacey Black, and Morgan, Sophie and Anthony.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2011, at the Deeley Funeral Home, Punxsutawney.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, 2011, at the funeral home with Pastor Robert Bish officiating.
Mr. Burkett will be sorely missed by his family and many friends.
His family has suggested that memorials in Mr. Burkett's honor be made to the American Diabetes Association.
