DA plans to seek death sentence in Michael Shugars case
BROOKVILLE — Jefferson County District Attorney Jeff Burkett has filed a notice of aggravating circumstances against Michael Christopher Shugars, Punxsutawney, the defendant in the case of the alleged murder of Chet
Allen Haddow, Punxsutawney.
The notice of aggravating circumstances means that, in the event that Shugars is found guilty of murder in the first-degree, the commonwealth intends to seek the death penalty.
The district attorney’s office confirmed on Thursday that it had filed the notice, a copy of which was submitted to The Spirit by the prothonotary’s office.
The notice said that the commonwealth intends to submit evidence at the sentencing hearing to prove the following aggravating circumstances: that the offense, murder in the first degree, was committed while Shugars was engaged in the perpetration of a felony or felonies as a principal, those felonies being kidnapping and robbery.
Shugars was charged with criminal homicide, kidnapping to inflict injury or terror, burglary and access device fraud, among others.
