YOUNG TOWNSHIP — Today’s the day you can see what type of improvements Young Township made to Cunningham Road this summer, as the road has reopened to traffic.

Young Township Supervisor Andrew R. Meterko said the road was completely relocated, thanks to Robert and Barb Hanley, who approved a right-of-way with the township which allowed it to be moved from its former location.

Meterko said the road construction project eliminated two 90-degree turns that were part of the old dirt road, with much of the work performed by township workers and several contractors.

“By moving the road, we were able to eliminate the two curves and replace them with one gradual circle curve,” he said, adding that it also cut the elevation of the road down.

Cunningham Road has always been owned by Young Township, and it was due for a major upgrade, which wouldn’t have been possible without the Hanleys’ cooperation Meterko said.

He said the township exchanged property with the Hanleys, who allowed township workers to cut through the hillside and carve out a much safer road.

The road went from a barely one-lane dirt road to a wider, two-lane paved road that will be much easier for residents to navigate, especially during winter, he said.

The project, which began in June, cost approximately $60,000, Meterko said, adding that the township also paved Guzzo Road in conjunction with the Cunningham project.

Meterko said residents may once again travel on Cunningham Road beginning this morning, as all of the barricades have been removed.
