Crash sends man, 22, to hospital

PUNXSUTAWNEY — A two-vehicle accident at 8 a.m. Tuesday on Route 36, Bell Township, sent a Punxsutawney man to an Altoona hospital.

According to Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police, a 2004 Dodge Neon driven by Tucker E. Smith, 22, Punxsutawney, was traveling north on Route 36 when his vehicle drifted into the southbound lane and struck a 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by Melanie R. Serian, 38, Punxsutawney, in the front left corner.

Police said it is believed that Smith may have fallen asleep just prior to the crash. He was flown by emergency medical helicopter to Altoona for treatment of moderate injuries, police reported, and Serian was not injured in the crash.

Police were assisted at the scene by the Punxsutawney Fire Department, Jefferson County EMS and Southside Towing.
