BROOKVILLE — The Jefferson County commissioners proclaimed that the month of March 2013 is Dog License Awareness Month in the county at their meeting on Tuesday.

The proclamation came with a handful of special guests — Pennsylvania Secretary of Agriculture George D. Greig, State Dog Warden Jamie Carlson and President of PADogLicense.com Jason Abla, introduced to the commission by County Treasurer James "Moon" VanSteenberg.

The proclamation came on the heels of VanSteenberg's announcement to area dog owners that 2013 dog licenses are now past due. They must be renewed each year by Jan. 1 regardless of when they were purchased the previous year and remain valid from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31 of each year.

Per state law, all dogs three months old and older must have a current-year license.

Failure to do so will result in a $300 fine plus court costs, as assessed by the state dog warden.
