PUNXSUTAWNEY — During a special meeting Monday, Punxsutawney Borough Council voted in favor of changing an ordinance designating the south side of Union Street to be town center commercial.

Prior to the vote, council conducted a public hearing to address the suggested rezoning of the south side of Union Street to allow for a beauty shop to open in a house on the Shumaker property.

Council President Larry Chenoga asked if there were any petitions and comments regarding the rezoning of that portion of Union Street. But since no one came forward to speak for or against the change, council adjourned the hearing.

Following the public hearing, council approved Ordinance No. 1118 to rezone the south side of Union Street from South Gilpin to South Jefferson as town center commercial.

Members of the Punxsutawney Planning & Zoning Commission passed a motion at their Jan. 25 meeting, recommending that council allow for the temporary occupancy for the Shumaker property.

At the Feb. 13 council meeting, Solicitor Jay Lundy said the changing of an ordinance is a 30-day process and must be advertised in the newspaper twice prior to the public hearing. Also, there is no temporary occupancy permit.

Michele Lorenzo, who is a member of both council and the planning commission, said the commission recommended to council that the south side of Union Street from South Gilpin to South Jefferson be rezoned because it was already surrounded by businesses.

Lundy said the borough would be in touch with the exact date that the ordinance would go into effect so the beauty shop owner could legally put her sign out for business.
