Council OKs purchase of new truck for Elk Run
PUNXSUTAWNEY — Monday, Punxsutawney Borough Council approved the purchase of a new fire engine for the Elk Run Fire Company.
Elk Run Chief Bryan Smith said the bids were opened last Friday, with Ferrara Fire Apparatus Inc., based in Holden, La., as the low bidder at $372,509.
The truck will be constructed in Louisiana and contain a six-person cab, a 1,000-gallon water tank, a 30-gallon compressed air foam system (CAFS) tank, and a 1,500-gallon per minute Darly pump.
Smith said Ferrara constructs its own chassis, and the design will be a cab over the engine model with a 330 horsepower engine and an automatic transmission.
The truck will be delivered in about seven months, Smith said. Another company the fire department has looked at said it would take nine months for its truck to be delivered.
Smith said Elk Run’s current engine, a 1981 Mack, will continue in service until the new one is delivered.
Council approved a motion to purchase the truck, and a second motion for the CAFS to be paid for by the members of the fire company.
Eighty percent of the total is due at the contract signing, which will save $15,000 on the cost of the truck, Smith said.
Elk Run President John Cochran said it has been a long haul getting ready to bid out the new truck, and he thanked the borough and the fire department truck committee for all their work.
Cochran said the CAFS is a fairly new technology employed by fire departments throughout the United States and Jefferson County.
Currently, the Ringgold, Oliver Township and Big Run fire companies are the only ones with CAFS systems.
The foam system kills the oxygen in a fire, knocking it down quicker, Cochran said. It also causes less damage; the hoses are lighter; and a fire is less likely to rekindle once the fire has been put out with foam.
Cochran said the members of the Elk Run company are eagerly anticipating the arrival of the new truck, hopefully by September, and grateful to the members of borough council for their support on the new engine.
