Punxsutawney Borough Police Chief Tom Fedigan

PUNXSUTAWNEY — With a 5-2 vote Monday, Punxsutawney Borough Council defeated Police Chief Tom Fedigan's request to begin the process of offering a new Civil Service examination to create a new eligibility list in order to hire a full-time borough police officer.

Fedigan said he wants to begin the process of hiring a new full-time police officer, which would require the scheduling of a civil service exam.

Council member William Spencer made the motion, which was seconded by Robert Reesman.

Spencer and Reesman voted yes, while council President Susan Glessner, Vice-President Donna Lellock and council members Roger Steele, Larry Chenoga and Mike Porada voted no.

Before the vote, Chenoga said his vote will be no until updates are made for civil service.

However, council approved Fedigan's request to allow a full-time employee to move into the full-time dispatcher position due to the retirement another person, and advertise for another full-time postion.
Council also approved hiring Jason Aharrah from Brookville as a part-time borough police officer.

Also Monday, council:

• Approved the transfer of Bill Neal from the sewage vactor crew to that of sewage treatment plant operator, and approved advertising the sewer vactor crew vacancy.

• Approved hiring a part-time borough parks maintenance person.
• Approved a request from the Elk Run Volunteer Fire Company to add Steven Craft to the active roll list.
