PUNXSUTAWNEY â€” Itâ€™s official: Punxsutawney Borough Council approved and voted to place on display the preliminary 2012 budget â€” with no tax increase â€” at Mondayâ€™s council meeting.
â€śThis is a tribute to our department heads and employees that they are able to put together their budget requests for 2012 without a tax increase in this economy,â€ť council President Susan Glessner said.
Council members approved Ordinance No. 1114 for 2012 that taxes valuation assessed for county purposes at the following millage rates with each mill being the equivalent of $0.10 on each $100 of assessed valuation, all under the authority of the Local Tax Enabling Act:
â€˘ 10.0 mills for general borough purposes.
â€˘ 0.90 mills for the purchase of fire engines, fire apparatus and fire hose and for the purpose of making appropriations to the fire department for payment of operational expenses and related purposes.
â€˘ 0.60 mills to maintain or aid in the maintenance of a local library for the use of residents of the borough.
â€˘ 0.45 mills for the purpose of making permanent street improvements.
â€˘ 0.75 mills for the purpose of lighting and illuminating the streets , highways, and other public places.
â€˘ 0.15 mills for the purpose of providing recreational facilities, support and maintenance.
â€˘ 0.15 mills for the purpose of providing pensions, retirement or the purchase of annuity contracts for borough employees.

Also at Mondayâ€™s meeting council:
â€˘ Approved Bryan Smith as the new Punxsutawney Fire Department Chief, who will be sworn in at councilâ€™s January reorganization meeting.
â€˘ Approved a request from the Punxsutawney Fire Department to hold its annual boot drive for area food banks Saturday, Dec. 10, and Sunday, Dec. 11.
â€˘ Approved the fire service contract with Young Township.
The agreement was approved for five years, with the township paying the borough $15,500 for 2012; $16,000 for 2013; $16,500 for 2014; $17,000 for 2015; $17,500 for 2016; and the township shall pay 100 percent of any Firemanâ€™s Relief Association funds it recovers during the contract to the borough.
Either the township or the borough may terminate the contract or renegotiate any term or provision with a written notice of its intentions at least six months in advance to the other municipality prior to Jan. 1 of the final year of the contract.
