Community Action, Inc. announces new service for homeless veterans

October 30, 2013

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Community Action, Inc., which services Jefferson and Clarion counties, launched a new federal program to serve the local area on Oct. 1: Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF).

"It's a supportive services program for homeless veterans or those at high risk of being homeless," said Rod Rhodes, planning director for Community Action.

Rhodes has been engaged in the process of informing local organizations about this new service to raise awareness among area veterans of what is available to them if they require assistance. He said that Community Action is already working with three veteran families under this program.
Rhodes said that SSVF is a housing-first program.

"The emphasis is getting them in housing and then start addressing some of the causes, barriers, etc., and the ultimate goal is to get them into affordable housing," he said.
