DUBOIS — The Punxsy boys' golf team travelled to DuBois Wednesday for the fifth annual DuBois Area High School Invitational Tournament and scored a combined 342 to earn a respectable fourth place, given the level of competition.

"Fourth place isn't that bad considering we were playing some huge schools out of our district," Punxsy head coach Josh Conrad said after the tournament.

Among the larger schools that competed was State College, which took first place in the tournament with a combined total score of 325.

Punxsy's leading scorer on the 18-hole course — the Silver Course in Treasure Lake — was Micky DeChurch with a 78.

Ian Miller shot a 79, just one stroke behind DeChurch, to bring in Punxsy's second-lowest score.

"Ian's score would've been a lot better if he could've had some of his 5-8 foot putts drop," Conrad said.

Only one other team had two players score in the 70s: State College, which had two players tie for the lowest score of the day.

Brian Charles and John Peterson each shot 77, and Charles won a playoff on the 18th hole to be crowned Low Gross champion.

DeChurch's 78 was good for a tie for third place with Miffling County's Jeremy Koller, and Millers 79 tied him for fifth with Nolan Robbins of Hollidaysburg.

Punxsy's other two players were Brandon Mancuso (88) and Mike Blose (97).

"Brandon and Mike got off to really rough starts and eventually settled in, but the damage was already done," Conrad said.

Overall, Conrad was pleased with the way his squad performed on a difficult course.

"They really had to grind it out today," he said. "The course conditions were extremely wet, and they just aerated the greens last week, so they were bumpy and uneven."

Punxsy heads to Bradford today for a practice round for districts, which will be held Monday.
