ST. MARYS â A pattern of scoring in clusters is forming. The Punxsy Chucks boysâ soccer continued their pattern of scoring in bunches on Saturday with five second half scores to explode past the Elk County Crusaders, 6-1.
âI am pleased with how the guy played,â said Punxsy coach Phil Shenkle. âECC always plays us tough.â
The Chucks, now 8-3, saw the pairing of Ty Zimmerman and Tanner Evans team up for the teamâs first four goals and three assists between them. Evans netted two goals and two assists, while Zimmerman scored two as well with one assist.
Kevin Hughes and Brycen Lunger booted the other two Punxsy goals.
Trevor Peace assisted on the fifth goal. Goalie Tristan Acre saved four Crusader shots.
In the 33rd minute of the contest, Evans lofted a corner kick on goal, which Zimmerman headed past the Elk County keeper for the lone first half score, 1-0.
After 10 scoreless second half minutes, the Chucks scoring run began. The visitors scored three times over a span two minutes. Evans started the goals with an unassisted tally in the 50th minute.
Only a minute later, Evans drove his second corner kick to the goal, which was again headed into the net by Zimmerman. The two teamed up for a third time when it was Zimmerman being the passer to Evans for his second score to break open a 4-0 lead.
âECC came with a lot of intensity, and we had to match it. When we did we were able to score in a big cluster,â added Shenkle.
The Crusaders put their lone goal on the board five minutes later when Ian Hurzing scored on a penalty kick.
Punxsy was not finished as the offense worked over ECC again when Peace pushed a ball through to Hughes for another goal.
Five minutes later in the 66th minute, Lunger added the final score unassisted for what would be the 6-1 final. The Chucks outshot the Crusaders on the day 28-7 and have now outscored their last three opponents 16-1.
Punxsy will return home at 7 p.m. on Tuesday night, when it will try to avenge its last defeat against Brockway.View more articles in:
