PUNXSUTAWNEY — With the contest tied at halftime, the Punxsy boys' soccer team blitzed Curwensville with three goals in the opening seven minutes of the second half to roll to a 7-2 victory in its home opener.
The Chucks (3-1) received a pair of goals from both senior Ty Zimmerman and junior Brycen Lunger to pace the offense.
Trevor Peace, Kevin Hughes and Tanner Evans chipped in a goal apiece of the seven-goal afternoon.
"The first half was ugly," said Punxsy coach Phil Shenkle. "Curwensville did a good job playing and worked hard. We played soft and didn't match their intensity."
The home team flipped the switch quickly from the start in the second 40 minutes.
With only 2:58 elapsed, Hughes received a pass from the left wing and booted a ball off a visiting defender into the goal to give Punxsy the 3-2 lead.
The Chucks were just getting started. Zimmerman connected on a ball 20 yards out straight away for the second quick goal 58 seconds later.
The third goal of the second frame took a little longer, 3:08 later to be exact, when Peace lined a 30-yard one-timer to the back left of the net to make it 5-2 Punxsy.
"We gave our starters 10 minutes to start the second half to respond or they would be replaced, and they responded with the scoring spree," explained Shenkle.
The scoring continued six minutes later at the 53:55 mark when Lunger made a penalty kick. The forward added his second goal by wrapping up the home scoring in the 63rd minute for the 7-2 final.
The Chucks did start out strong behind a Zimmerman goal in the 27th minute before Evans found the net 30 seconds later.
The Tide rallied with their own pair of goals to make it a tie, 2-2, at halftime.
Punxsy will go back to DuBois for the second time in two weeks, this time to face DuBois on Tuesday.View more articles in:
