Chucks pound Owls, prepare for rematch
BRADFORD — The Punxsy baseball team completed a six-game, regular season-ending winning streak Saturday when it won 16-5 at Bradford. The Chucks wrapped up the No. 1 seed in the District IX Class AAA playoffs due to their successful finish to the regular season.
All four District IX Class AAA teams will enter the postseason, which begins Wednesday. Punxsy (12-7) will host Bradford (5-12) at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at Rich Kuntz Memorial Field, and No. 2 St. Marys (10-9) will host No. 3 Clearfield (9-10) at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.
The winners will compete for the district title the following week at a time, date and venue to be determined.
The Chucks are in search of their eighth consecutive district title.
Saturday in Bradford, Punxsy scored the final 12 runs of the game after it fell behind 5-4 through three innings.
The Chucks scored the first four runs of the game during the first inning, but the Owls answered with two runs in the second and three in the third. After Punxsy tied the game with a run in the fourth, it exploded for 11 runs during its final two at-bats.
Punxsy scored six times in the sixth and seven runs in the seventh.
Punxsy, which was hit by a pitch five times and drew five walks, totaled nine hits.
Tyler Skerkavich had a big game for the Chucks. He was 2-for-4 with a home run, five RBIs and three runs.
Brodi Lowmaster and Devan Neal each had two hits for Punxsy.
Zak Dickey singled and scored four runs, Jordan Mesoraco singled and scored three times, and Ty Zimmerman drew two walks, was twice hit by a pitch and crossed home plate three times.
Luke Janocha pitched three innings in relief for the win. He struck out five, walked one and gave up no runs on two hits. Jamie Bush received the no-decision after he pitched the first three innings and surrendered five runs.
Ty Zimmerman delivered a scoreless seventh inning.
Janocha also singled, had an RBI and scored a run, and Neal scored once.
