PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsy seventh-grade boys' basketball team finished the season on a three-game winning streak, including a pair of double-digit victories that rounded-out the squad's 13-7 year.
Punxsy concluded the season with a 35-23 win at home Feb. 18. Prior to that, the Chucks won by 16 points at Clearfield. Punxsy first-year coach Darren Sherry was happy with how his squad progressed in its first junior-high year together.
"My objective as the seventh-grade coach is to build upon the fundamental skills each player has been introduced to in our elementary program, then from there, form a solid foundation as a player both individually and as a team member," Sherry said. "Overall, I was very pleased with the performances and progress of each individual player and the team as a whole. Each player improved individually throughout the season."
During the final game, John Matthews came up huge on the scoring end, nearly totaling as many points as the Owls. He scored 20 points, and Nathan Ray followed with five points.
Helping the Chucks develop this season was Bill Vassallo, who assisted Sherry as a volunteer coach. Vassallo, currently PAHS' assistant athletic director, was the head coach of Punxsy's varsity team for more than 20 years.
