ST. MARYS — The Punxsy boys' track and field team won five of the seven field events during a 83-67 victory over Elk County Catholic Tuesday in St. Marys.

"We did what we had to do early in the season," Punxsy head coach John Smith said. "It was a close meet, as we expected, and we did well despite the cold weather."

Punxsy was dominant in the field, led by junior Brody Morgan, who won all three throwing events.

Morgan took first in the discus (117-2), javelin (141-9) and shot put (46-3 1/2).

Also winning in the field for Punxsy were Tyler Presloid in the pole vault (11-6) and Kevin Byars in the long jump (19-8 3/4).

Punxsy's successful day wasn't limited to just the field, as it won three individual track events and two of the three relays.

Leading the way on the track was senior A.J. Meterko, who won the 800-meter run in 2:08, the 1,600-meter run in 4:46 and was part of the Chucks' winning 4x800-meter relay team.

Punxsy's Meterko, Thomas Wagner, Derick Kelly and Nathan Ward won the 4x800 in 8:51, besting ECC by 23 seconds.

Punxsy also won the 4x100, with Glenn Perry, Spencer Fiumara, Presloid and Matt Burke finishing in 48.6 seconds.

ECC avenged those losses by winning the 4x400 in 3:42.9, beating Punxsy's time of 3:51.

Punxsy's other win on the track came from Devon Luzell in the 100-meter dash (12.0). The Chucks swept that event, with Fiumara (12.1) and Perry (12.1) taking second and third.

Two other Punxsy sweeps came in the 1,600, with Ward (5:08.5) and Nathan Steffey (5:22.5) finishing after Meterko; and the dicsus, with Jordan London (104-1) and Stephen Stumpf (100-3 1/2) taking second and third.

Punxsy's other second-place finishes came from Dylan Lettie (100-meter high hurdles, 18.9 and 300-meter hurdles, 45.7); Kevin Hughes (400-meter dash, 55.6); Ward (3,200-meter run, 11:48); and Dakotah Byers (triple jump, 40-5).

Taking third for Punxsy were Perry and Fiumara in the 200-meter dash (25.0); Lettie (high jump, 5-8); Luzell (shot put); Brett Neal (300 hurdles, 48.6); and Quinton Weber (800 run, 2:21).

Punxsy's next meet is at 4 p.m. next Tuesday in Brookville.
