DUBOIS — When it rains, it pours. And when it pours, it makes it difficult to maintain the rough at a golf course. But the deep rough wasn't enough to slow the Punxsy boys' golf team, as it defeated DuBois at the DuBois Country Club Monday afternoon, 178-194.
By winning, Punxsy avenged a 162-165 loss at the Punxsutawney Country Club Aug. 29 and put its destiny in its own hands headed into a match at Brookville next Tuesday.
"If we beat Brookville a week from (today), Bradford will come here for the AML championship," Punxsy head coach Josh Conrad said.
Conrad was glad to pick up the win but also was quick to point out that his guys played better than the score card showed given the difficult course conditions.
"We played better than our score looks like," he said. "The course played really difficult today with it being so wet lately and with them not being able to get the mowers on it. The rough was 10 inches high in some areas, and it just swallowed some of the shots."
Punxsy was led by Micky DeChurch, who shot a 40 on the nine-hole course, including a birdie on No. 10.
DeChurch was closely followed by teammate Ian Miller, who came in one stroke behind with a 41.
Conrad's comments on his top two players' perform-ances were short and sweet: "Micky and Ian came through, as they usually do."
DuBois' low scorer was Nate Crawford with a 43.
Punxsy's final two scorers were Logan Reed (48) and Mike Blose (49).
"We chugged along with pars and bogeys and got through it," Conrad said. "All of our scores were in the 40s that were taken. They did a great job, and it's good to win there when they won here earlier this year."
Jesse Verdill (54) and Eli Thompson (55) rounded out the field for the Chucks.
Brad Gresock (46); Trey Gilmore (49); and David Vrbassik (56) also scored for DuBois.
Conrad is hoping that his boys can bring home the win next Tuesday against Brookville, but he also knows they have their work cut out for them.
"Brookville's playing really well right now," he said. "So we'll have to play well to beat them."
If Brookville were to defeat Punxsy, Conrad said the tie-breakers get quite confusing, but Punxsy hopes they never have to find out how they work.
DeChurch, Miller and Brandon Mancuso will travel to Bradford for an invitational Saturday before Tuesday's match.View more articles in:
